Birth Registration
Find out how to register a child's birth in Poland. Learn how to obtain a birth certificate, PESEL number, register the newborn's address and apply for the 800+ benefit — step by step.
Variants
Standard (hospital notifies the civil registry)
The child was born in a hospital in Poland and the hospital sent the birth card to the civil registry
Self-registration by parents
Parents register the birth themselves at the civil registry (e.g. home birth or hospital did not send the card)
Child born abroad
The child was born outside Poland and you want to register the birth at a Polish civil registry
How to handle it — step by step
For a hospital birth the process starts automatically:
What does the hospital do?
- The hospital prepares a birth card for the child
- The card is sent electronically to the civil registry responsible for the place of birth within 3 days of delivery
- The hospital informs the parents that the card has been sent
What must the parents do?
- Provide the child's name — within 21 days of the birth. If no name is provided in time, the head of the civil registry will enter a name ex officio
- Appear at the civil registry — at least one parent (in person or online via gov.pl)
Birth outside a hospital
If the child was born outside a hospital (home birth), the birth card is issued by the doctor or midwife who attended the birth. Parents deliver it to the civil registry themselves.
You have 21 days to register the birth at the civil registry.
