Complete a medical examination

Before starting a course you must obtain a medical certificate confirming no health contraindications to driving vehicles.

The examination is performed by a doctor authorised to examine drivers — find a list at the starostwo or on the voivodeship office website.

The exam covers, among others:

  • vision (acuity, field of vision, colour vision)
  • hearing
  • general health
  • nervous system

The certificate is valid for 30 months from the date of issue (but no longer than until completing the course and passing the exam).

How to obtain a PKK?

  1. Submit an application online at gov.pl or in person at the starostwo/city hall
  2. Attach the medical certificate
  3. Attach a colour photo (35×45 mm)

The PKK is usually generated within 2 business days. Pass the PKK number to the driving school and the WORD.

Enrol in a driving school (OSK)

Choose an Approved Driving School (OSK) and enrol in a course.

A category B course includes:

  • 30 hours of theory (lectures or e-learning)
  • 30 hours of practical driving (with an instructor)

When choosing a driving school, consider:

  • reviews and pass rates (WORD statistics)
  • location of the manoeuvring area and test routes
  • availability of lesson slots
  • make and model of the training car (ideally the same as on the WORD exam)

After completing the course, the driving school enters the result into the IT system — this allows you to register for the exam.

Remember about the probationary period

For 2 years after obtaining your first cat. B driving licence, a probationary period applies. Be especially careful — the consequences of violations are stricter.

Check your third-party liability (OC) insurance

Before driving your own car, buy mandatory OC (third-party liability) insurance. Young drivers may pay higher premiums.
