Learn how to obtain a driving licence in Poland — from medical exams, through driving school, to exams at the WORD and collecting your document at the starostwo. Check costs, required documents, and the timeline.

How to handle it — step by step
Before starting a course you must obtain a medical certificate confirming no health contraindications to driving vehicles.
The examination is performed by a doctor authorised to examine drivers — find a list at the starostwo or on the voivodeship office website.
The exam covers, among others:
- vision (acuity, field of vision, colour vision)
- hearing
- general health
- nervous system
The certificate is valid for 30 months from the date of issue (but no longer than until completing the course and passing the exam).

The Driver Candidate Profile (PKK) is an electronic document required to start the course and register for the exam.
How to obtain a PKK?
- Submit an application online at gov.pl or in person at the starostwo/city hall
- Attach the medical certificate
- Attach a colour photo (35×45 mm)
The PKK is usually generated within 2 business days. Pass the PKK number to the driving school and the WORD.

Choose an Approved Driving School (OSK) and enrol in a course.
A category B course includes:
- 30 hours of theory (lectures or e-learning)
- 30 hours of practical driving (with an instructor)
When choosing a driving school, consider:
- reviews and pass rates (WORD statistics)
- location of the manoeuvring area and test routes
- availability of lesson slots
- make and model of the training car (ideally the same as on the WORD exam)
After completing the course, the driving school enters the result into the IT system — this allows you to register for the exam.

The theory test takes place at the Provincial Road Traffic Centre (WORD).
Exam format
- 32 questions displayed on a computer
- 20 questions worth 2 points + 12 questions worth 3 points = max. 76 points
- Pass threshold: 68 points (approx. 90%)
- Time: 25 minutes
How to register?
- Go to your WORD's website or call them
- Provide your PKK number
- Choose a date
You will know your result immediately after the exam. Once you pass, you can proceed to the practical test.

The practical test takes place at the WORD on the manoeuvring area and in urban traffic.
Exam stages (cat. B)
Manoeuvring area:
- driving along a curve forwards and backwards
- parallel, perpendicular or diagonal parking
- starting on an incline
- turning around
Urban traffic:
- driving along a designated route (approx. 40 minutes)
- the examiner assesses driving technique, compliance with regulations and road behaviour
Result
The pass threshold requires no eliminating errors. Minor irregularities are permitted.

After passing the practical exam, WORD automatically sends the result to the starostwo. The driving licence is produced by the Polish Security Printing Works (PWPW).
How to collect?
- Submit an application for issuance at the starostwo or city hall (if you haven't done so when obtaining the PKK)
- Pay the fee of 100.50 PLN
- Wait for production (approx. 7–9 business days)
- Collect the document in person

An international driving permit (IDP) is a translation of the Polish driving licence, recognised in countries outside the EU/EEA.
Requirements
- valid Polish driving licence
- photo 35×45 mm
- application submitted at the starostwo or city hall
Validity
- Vienna Convention (1968) — 3 years
- Geneva Convention (1949) — 1 year
The type of document depends on the destination country — check which convention the country recognises.
An international driving permit is not a standalone document — you must also carry your Polish driving licence.

After completion
For 2 years after obtaining your first cat. B driving licence, a probationary period applies. Be especially careful — the consequences of violations are stricter.
Before driving your own car, buy mandatory OC (third-party liability) insurance. Young drivers may pay higher premiums.
